Sterling Silver vs Silver Plated: How to Tell the Difference Before You Buy

by Abdesigns Jewellery on Jul 02, 2026
Hallmarked 925 sterling silver smiley charm — how to tell real sterling silver from silver plated, Abdesigns

You found a beautiful piece of silver jewelry online. The price looks fair, the photos look premium — but is it actually sterling silver, or silver-plated brass that will turn your skin green in three weeks? Here is how to tell the difference before you spend a dollar.

What 925 Sterling Silver Actually Means

Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals (usually copper) added for strength. Pure silver is too soft for daily-wear jewelry, so 925 is the global standard for genuine silver pieces. Authentic sterling silver is always hallmarked — look for a tiny "925", "S925", or "Sterling" stamp, usually on the clasp, the inside of a band, or the back of a pendant.

What Silver Plated Really Is

Silver-plated jewelry is a base metal — typically brass, copper, or zinc alloy — coated with a microscopically thin layer of silver, often less than 0.5 microns. It looks identical in photos. The difference shows up in months two and three, when the plating wears through at contact points and the base metal underneath oxidizes or reacts with your skin.

5 Ways to Tell the Difference

  1. Find the hallmark. No 925 stamp is the single biggest red flag. Reputable sellers hallmark every genuine piece.
  2. Check the price against weight. Silver has a real commodity price. A "sterling silver" statement necklace for $8 shipped is not sterling silver.
  3. Read the listing language. "Silver tone," "silver color," and "silver finish" are legal ways of saying not silver. Only "925," "sterling silver," or "solid silver" mean the real thing.
  4. The magnet test. Silver is not magnetic. If a strong magnet grabs the piece, it is mostly base metal. (Note: passing this test alone doesn't prove it's silver — brass isn't magnetic either.)
  5. Ask about tarnish. Real silver tarnishes gently and polishes back to full shine with a cloth. Plating doesn't tarnish — it wears off, and there is no bringing it back.

Which One Should You Buy?

Both have a place. For pieces that touch your skin daily — charms, chains, anklets, everyday earrings — 925 sterling silver is worth it: it is hypoallergenic, lasts decades, and holds resale value. For occasional statement pieces worn a few times a year, quality gold-plated brass jewelry is a smart, budget-friendly choice — as long as the seller is honest about what it is.

At Abdesigns, we do both and label both clearly. Our 925 sterling silver charms are hallmarked on the clasp — like our bestselling Smiley multi-use charm — while our festive Indian pieces, like the gold plated lotus anklet, are honestly described as gold-plated brass at a price that reflects it.

The Bottom Line

The metal doesn't make jewelry good or bad — the honesty of the seller does. Look for the hallmark, read the material description word by word, and buy from brands that tell you exactly what you're getting.
