The Real Difference Between 925 Sterling Silver and Silver-Plated
Walk into any jewellery shop — online or offline — and you will find two very different products both described as silver. One is genuine 925 sterling silver. The other is silver-plated. They look similar in a product photo. They are completely different in real life. Here is the honest difference.
What Is 925 Sterling Silver?
925 sterling silver is a solid metal alloy — 92.5% pure silver throughout. Cut it in half, the inside is the same material as the outside. It carries the 925 hallmark stamp. It can be re-polished indefinitely. It develops a natural patina and ages beautifully. It is the real thing.
What Is Silver-Plated?
Silver-plated jewellery is base metal — usually brass or copper — with a thin layer of silver deposited on the surface through an electroplating process. That layer is typically between 0.5 and 5 microns thick. For reference, a human hair is roughly 70 microns. The silver layer will wear through with regular use, revealing the base metal underneath.
The Four Key Differences
- Longevity: Sterling silver lasts decades with basic care. Silver-plated typically lasts 1-3 years before the plating wears through.
- Tarnish recovery: Sterling silver polishes back to full shine. Once silver plating wears through, you cannot restore it.
- Skin safety: Genuine sterling silver is hypoallergenic for most people. Base metals under silver plating (often nickel) can cause allergic reactions.
- Value: Sterling silver retains intrinsic value. Silver-plated has no intrinsic metal value.
How to Tell Them Apart
Look for the hallmark. 925 stamped on the piece means sterling silver. No stamp, or stamps like EP (electroplated), SP (silver-plated), or EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) mean it is not genuine sterling silver.

FAQ
Is sterling silver better than silver-plated?
Yes, significantly. Sterling silver is solid genuine silver that lasts decades. Silver-plated is a thin layer over base metal that wears through within years.
Can you tell the difference between sterling silver and silver-plated?
Look for the 925 hallmark stamp. Its presence confirms sterling silver. Absence of a hallmark, or stamps like EP or SP, indicate silver-plated.
Does silver-plated turn green?
When the silver plating wears through, the base metal (often copper or brass) is exposed and can oxidise, leaving green marks on skin.
